how-to-use-google-analyticsGoogle Analytics is an awesome tool that you can use to increase the traffic to your website. It can also be an awesome waste of time if you don’t understand how to use it effectively.

In the video below, I’m going to show you the four most important areas (bounce rate, time on site, traffic sources, top content) for you to study.

By knowing how to analyze the data in these four areas, you are going to have a much better chance of increasing the traffic to your site, as well as how much profit it makes for you.

Hey Trent – great video! That’s a high traffic niche site – great job!

Thanks very much. I recently purchased 1/2 this site from a friend who wanted me to help grow it. I have quite a number of plans in store and will blog about it all.

    Trent,

It’s easy to get the bounce rate down and average time up – just post a video…I don’t really look at those numbers too much.

Also, when I look in the keyword section, I look at the page the visitors are finding the site through each keyword. There are probably a ton of keywords that get a lot of searches that you are not even targeting. I wouldn’t build a new site around a keyword, I would add to the current site…if that keyword makes a good amount of money, then maybe look into creating a new site.

You need to be looking at the keywords AND landing pages for those keywords. Once you have that traffic, you basically have your own keyword tool.

      Hey Shuck,

Thanks for adding your ideas…you’ve shared some really great stuff! I do already plan to add some videos as that is something that I’ve done in the past.

      Cheers,
      Trent

Shuck Really good advice a video will decrease the bounce rate on a good percent when implemented.

Another thing i was just watching is that most of the backlinks are built for the domain itself so a good idea will be to start building Backlinks to the best pages on that site.

Now that you have all that information on google analytics its time to blast those best perfomance with backlinks (Since the domain is Rank 5 and 11 years old domain you wont have any issue).

After doing that for sure your adsense earnings will increase 100% .

Google Webmaster tool is also an excellent tool to know where to start doing some outside SEO.

With such an old domain, I am very keen to see how fast new content ranks as well. Thanks for chiming in Aldo!

Great video Trent, just want to add as well that this information is great for those who are struggling with building email blasts with their mailing lists. I know you touched on briefly about setting up opt in-forms for individual pages but you can also use these keywords for your emails.

For a targeted niche site you could 1-2 keywords per week which your not going to build articles around, send them to article writers and have them write tip based articles, ie: lead in paragraph then tip 1, 2, finish off with directing them to a related post on your site and so on.

Another fav on mine with large sites with these keywords, is to build pages around them and then send out a blast with a short 150 word intro to the page and then directing people to that page. Employing both these techniques can give people a few solid months of email submissions scattered with occasional product offers to monetize your list as well. This was always one area I struggled with.

    Cheers
    Norm

Awesome suggestions, mate! Thanks for sharing them with the OIL community.

    Nice done Trent.

I notice that is 11 years old, did you built all those Backlinks yourself or it has another owner before you?

Good Keyword “Cleaning” $4.48 CPC, nice done men!

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

      Thanks Aldo,

I’ve known the prior owner for a long time and over the last year, we talked about a change in ownership. About a week ago, we came to a deal and now we’re partners in it with me doing the continued development. Needless to say, I’m stoked to have added such a terrific asset to my portfolio!

Yeah , that site will drastically increase your montly income report ! xD.

Also would be nice you could share the backlink strategy behind that site ;), i was sneaking a bit and they look to do a very good job.

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

There was no strategy. The original owner just started posting quality, original content and the links came in. There was a PR strategy, however, and the site got plenty of press way back then. I’m sure that contributed to all the links.

  • http://wealthyaffiliatedetails.com aldo

Another idea i could share is to place one of the Adsense ads between tweets and the cleaning categories at the right column (using the same font color) .

In my opinion the Adsense ads in that place will look like more content from the site and will have a nice CTR.

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

I’ve just added the Adsense widget to the sidebar with its own custom channel so we’ll see how that performs over the next week. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • http://wealthyaffiliatedetails.com aldo

You should try changing the Blue Title Font Color to the green that match your site.

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

Spencer was the one who suggested that I use blue. I will probably test green at some point.

    Trent,

Just a quick note. You may want to update the URL at the end of the video. You have a typo and it reads OnlineIncomLab.com (missing the “e”). Thought I’d let you know so you don’t miss out on the valuable traffic.

    Good video and thanks.

    Trent,

Great quick tips for Analytics…useful stuff. I really like that niche site you’re partnering up on…lots of room for growth there, eh?

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

      Hey Justin,

Yes, I think that we should be able to get that site earning a few thousand a month….plenty of work to do to get there, however. What would you do with it?

  • Craig

    Hi Trent,

Thanks for this useful video. I just looked up “cleaning” in Google Keyword Tool and noticed it reports 12,100 exact local searches. I noticed around 3:00 that Google is sending you around 1,014 and you are the in the number one spot for the keyword.

I wouldn’t have expected such a big difference from those values. I’m performing keyword research right now and those two numbers don’t seem to have a very big correlation.

Your overall visits number is great because you are getting traffic from so many keywords, but with such a big difference between the primary (I assume) keyword between the searched and the amount of traffic is a little concerning. And a little disheartening for someone who is just starting – like me :)

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,Craig

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

      Hey Craig,

I noticed the same thing when I took over the site a few weeks ago. While I don’t (yet) have a great explanation, I CAN tell you that it is an anomaly. With most of my niche sites, the traffic usually exceeds the amount that I expected because the long tail words (which I don’t originally factor into the math) end up bringing more than you expect.

    Trent –

Do you typically set up Google Analytics with all your sites? I am kind of hesitant to be linking too much information with Google and using their Webmaster Tools, etc.

    Any thoughts?

    • http://onlineincomelab.com Trent Dyrsmid

I use analytics on every site and have never had a problem.
