Thanks Trent. I completely agree – the one dagger in the heart of any business is lack of follow through. I, for one, am guilty of allowing my inbox to be filled with every free program, newsletter or subscription I ran across. All it got me was an e-mail addy that I eventually changed since I had so much spam!

I’ve realized that slow and steady does indeed win the race. And paying for something gives a value to me personally that can and will help me push through the tough times.

Nothing invested = nothing to lose = eventual failure.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hi Travis,

Glad to hear you’ve seen the light. Have you already selected your mentor? If not, Niche Site Mastery has a free module to get you started. However, in keeping my my “free shit is bad” theme…it probably sucks 😛

      • Travis Ross

Haven’t selected anyone yet, just been trying to create content for now. I’m not sure that niche marketing is where I want to land, but I can definitely appreciate the SEO aspects and can learn a lot there!

  • Rick

Trent I agree. Now there may be an anomaly where someone has taken a bunch of free stuff and actually leveraged it into income but this would be the exception and not the norm.

I made this mistake when I first got online and it definitely slowed down the time I started to earn money online. A good book to read is called Mastery by George Burr Leonard. He goes into great detail on the subject of become masterful at what you do.

I say FOCUS – Follow One Course Until Successful. This is another reason why I don’t particularly webinars because I know that I may get lots of valuable information on the call there will be many things that’s missing. So many people will sit on the call and ask a 1000 questions thinking the are going to get the whole enchilada.

Find one person that you respect that is getting the kind of success that you hope to achieve and duplicate what they do. Then and only then should you begin to put your own spin on it.

    Another great post.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hey Rick,

Thanks for sharing your comment with the OIL community. Hopefully it will sink in for some of my other readers :)

  • art

    great video and very true.

  • Ben

Haha Trent you bastard you nailed it, but it’s not condescending cause it’s obvious you have been there also…

Thanks to NSM and particularly our recent chat I have made the plunge and grabbed a VA. Straight away my output has increased dramatically. You helped me realise that absolutely anything you are doing that you do not enjoy or is slowing things down you should simply offload to someone else.

A subtlety that had escaped me for far to long. Cheers

    • Trent Dyrsmid

That is fantastic news. Every time I get a comment like yours, it renews my desire to keep putting out (paid!) content :) Don’t worry though…I still love to blog!

  • Don

Wow. You hit it right on the head..

I can’t recall anything I got for free that actually helped me enough to warrant the time i spent using it or implementing it as the “free” never gave me enough Info so had to do more learning about it on my own only to find out it wasn’t working.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hey Don,

If only more people would realize this, the failure rate in this business wouldn’t be so high! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  • Doug

I agree, I have been bouncing all over getting information from lot of experts, most of them good. My question is, you offer free stuff? Are you saying avoid free stuff or try to focus on person’s teachings? Following lots of people is a waste of time. I think I should focus on one person and delete the rest, what do you think?

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hey Doug,

Yes, I do offer one free module of Niche Site Mastery and it contains some of my best content. The idea is that once people have seen some of my lessons, they’ll be willing to pay for more. In fact, there is an upgrade page that I just shot a new video for. It also offers some of my coaching programs, and that is where I’m really trying to direct people so that I can hold them accountable and they can get less distracted by too many other free offers. The bottom line is this…pick someone and follow them…so long as you know what they are doing is working!

  • Jeff

Awesome post. I can’t tell you how many hours I wasted pouring over hundreds of pages of content when I started learning about internet marketing earlier this year. There is so much information out there, and it can really turn into a time vampire if you aren’t careful.

I know I regret not taking this approach sooner. My blog languished while I got a crash course in IM. I’m just now writing posts that I should have done months ago. Invest a small amount of cash in education and a huge chunk of your time making money.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

Glad to hear you are off the free-shit bandwagon, too!

  • Alex

Trent, I’m not sure if you showed that “free” was the issue or that lack of focus was the real issue?

After all you can hop from one paid program to another!

    • Trent Dyrsmid

I agree with you completely. That is why I offer the coaching to go with my premium memberships. Hopefully, by having a coach, newbies will be less likely to fall victim to shiny objects.

  • Sjors

Hey Trent, since a few weeks I finally realized that the 100gb of free stuff sitting on my hard drive isn’t doing me any good. I actually did waste a year (my first domains are expiring now) of looking through all of the free stuff I have. And I have about 15 domains, none of them are live yet.. thanks a LOT for emphasizing this for me…. but if you are following the path I’ve been walking the last year I can recommend one thing that will help you a lot with learning… put EVERYTHING you’ve learned in a mindmap… and make sure it’s structured… atleast that gives you the feeling that you’ve actually did learn something with all the free courses… and if you do take action you can look back to the mindmap and see what steps you can take next…. you know what I’m going to do right now? I’m going to DELETE almost every course on my hard drive.. (except for a few) then I’m going to purchase Secockpit and your course and that will be the last thing I’m going to learn and then I’m only going to take action… until I’ve reached my goals… thanks a lot Trent.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

Wow, Sjors! Yours is the comment of the month for sure. Thank you! I can promise you that if you do what you say, you are going to succeed, my friend. The hardest part about this business is STICKING with something until it works (assuming you know it will work – as is the case with Adsense)

  • David

I’m with ya on that one Trent. Free can be VERY expensive. You should do a post on the top ten IMers you trust.

Also, love the video format. Keep those coming.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

I do plan to do more video…it just so much faster for me to get my message out. I’ve been know to spend all day perfecting a post in the past!

      • Matthew N

Funny.. for me video is the big consumer of time

Trent big question, how come you’re not getting a VA to transcribe your videos? Cheap + great for SEO

        • Trent Dyrsmid

You’ll probably notice that all my podcasts are transcribed already…so, truthfully…because I forgot!

  • Matthew N

    So true bro.

One of my biggest tips for any noob as well.

    Stop penny-pinching. Buy quality.

I’ll be signing up for NSM soon enough, just doing a few other things first.

    • Matthew N

and by “other things first” I’m referring to reading all of the totally cool 55 free ebooks I have just gotten. 😉

      • Trent Dyrsmid

        ha ha!!

  • Kathi

It’s interesting to think of free as a negative thing, especially coming from the mindset of always trying to get a good deal. You do a very good job of illustrating that free is NOT always a good deal!

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hi Kathi,

Thanks for sharing your perspective here with the OIL community. Glad to know my idea resonated with you!

  • Anshul

Agree with Alex’s comment above. It’s not so much to do with Free or paid stuff but finding a method that works for you and then executing a plan.

I have been a member of NSM from the start which has been great and has actually helped me make money but would you agree Trent that your focus has changed from Amazon or other commission based methods to now purely adsense as you have tried a few techniques and found adsense to be the most effective? (which is what I’m trying to suggest in this comment)

    • Trent Dyrsmid

That is absolutely correct….Had I found an site like Niche Site Mastery when I started, I would have been building Adsense from the start. Instead, I want to find free information and did just that on the Warrior Forum; hence why I started to build Amazon sites. I should point out that there is nothing wrong with the Amazon affilate approach; however, I prefer the idea that a visitor only need click an ad (as opposed to buying something) for me to get paid.

  • Tim

I’ve been chasing the next shiny (free) training for a while, but it did help me to find the guys who really know how to train, so then I was happy to buy the paid for training.

  • Sunil from The Extra Money Blog

the challenge i believe to begin with is that many who start are desperate to begin with and usually start with few to no dollars in discretionary spending. those who are already successful in their careers can afford and are willing to open the wallet to overcome the unknown and expedite the progress to success. you are right – there is no doubt that spending on your endeavors yields bigger and better results. unfortunately not everyone has the capability to do so. those that do know the power of paying for outside help

  • Marino

Guilt as charged. Just 3 days ago, I unsubscribed to a half dozen lists because I was not reading them anyway. I’m now moving forward by keeping things simple. I’m glad this video help justified my actions.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hi Marino,

Thanks for commenting. Glad to hear my video was helpful :)

  • Ric

Trent, you are spot on. Most people just don’t equate time with value. The thing I hear the most is “I don’t have the time” we all know this is an excuse, dangle a $1000.00 as a carrot and see how quickly schedules change.

As I age I feel the end of the yard stick getting closer, this makes time much more valuable.

Trent, don’t you think the overall battle in this game is the mindset training throughout the educational process? Kids are groomed on school to “go get a job” not “go build a business”. I believe this, along with your points on focus and time value, is one of the biggest hurdles people have to overcome.

Learning about time itself is a course, thanks for the video and post, really good points here…

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hi Ric,

Yes, I do believe that mindset is the most important part of success because without a positive outlook, one gives up at the first obstacle. On my journey over the last 9 months, there have been MANY obstacles, I can assure you, and had I not possessed an unshakable belief that I could succeed, I’m sure that I would have quite long ago.

  • Fiona Howarth

Wow Trent, that video sums up the last 18 months of my internet marketing career sadly. Not only do I feel a complete failure but my partner is fed up of financially bailing me out and is pressuring me into getting a job again….which sucks.

I can see some light at the end of the tunnel now.

    Many thanks.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hi Fiona,

I’m sorry to hear of your challenges, however, the past is just that and today is a new day. My advice, ignore EVERYTHING and focus only on learning how to build Adsense sites that get free traffic from SEO. Unsubscribe from everything that doesn’t teach you about this. Be RUTHLESS with your time and you will succeed. Its just not that hard to do!

  • Martin Berger

    This appears to be true…

I have been thinking and reading about Internet Marketing for some time, particularly to see if IM is something where i would spent my time. I asked around and my friend recommended you. And i have spend around 20+ hours reading and watching your staff. And now i have a global picture of the whole process of this business.

And yes, there is a bunch of info on the net for free, but i don’t know how to use it. I spent so much time on OIL and NSM because i had to be sure of what you are teaching.

I have already paid to one guy which is very successful but i couldn’t utilize anything he has (he is making millions). It was just too advanced for me.

And you, you look more to the ground with the basics, which i need more. I dont need some uber-IM ways to make some huge cash, i need about 600-800$ a month by the end of this or next year, so that i can focus on other things instead of doing this stupid job i am doing now. That sum is pretty large where i live…

I have choosen HostGator for hosting, put cash on my VISA and i expect to see you on Skype soon :)

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hey Martin,

Glad to hear you’ve joined the NSM community. I’ll see you on Skype soon.

  • Eric

I never make any money when I only try to get free stuff for help my business. Only get some small access after my purchase. I research and find something really can help me and invest in it. Then I got my invest back soon and get more success. But I already wasted years of time. Now I am good at picking and buying the tools can really help me on the way to success. But you guys point it more clearly.

    Thanks trent.

  • Rene Miller

Oh, so true! I have 3 email boxes and I am closing two of them when I get a FREE minute. It makes no sense whatsoever. It took me 3 months to figure out that if I kept enrolling in free this and free that; I get the free crap in my email and I get pissed because I have no idea how it came to be? It is ridiculous to even think that I will have time to sit and read any of it. If I even tried to clean out the email I wouldn’t have time to concentrate on the things that mattered most. What a waste. Thanks for the heads up.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Hi Rene,

I’m pleased to hear that this article struck a chord with you!

  • Mike

Trent – You are a breath of fresh air. I just flushed $395.00 down the toilet by giving that to an individual who parades around the internet as an honest guy who rails against crooked internet gurus. He runs a “workshop” – which was 8 hours long. The problem with this “workshop” was that it was COMPLETELY UNSTRUCTURED. Basically – it was 8 hours of a simply useless, weak stream of consciousness with NO MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. I won’t be crass and go so far as to mention who this guy is – but his first name begins with a C and his last name begins with an M. In any case – I consider myself fortunate to have found your website and will partake in your courses. You come across as as a stand-up individual as well as a gentleman who offers real VALUE FOR THE MONEY.

    • Trent Dyrsmid

      Thanks Mike :)
