Creating a Lead Magnet to Build a List

Step #1 is creating a lead magnet – something that will inspire enough action from prospects to opt-in to our list. These of course come in all kinds of forms, many of which could apply for what we are doing:

  • Free reports
  • Webinars
  • Videos
  • Metabolism calculators
  • Real age calculators
  • Etc.

I’m sure you can think of many more.

For now, we have decided to go with a free report to start building our list. This decision was made based on looking at the lead magnets being used by some of the top fitness offers currently on Clickbank.

Will this be the lead magnet that ultimately pulls the best for us?  Who knows? But for now it’s something to get rolling with!

Creating Ads to Get Traffic

Step #2 is to create some ads to get traffic. As I mentioned in a previous post, we are going to focus on Facebook advertising for now as a way of getting traffic and testing various offers.

Here is where you come in – I need your help!

One of the beauties of Facebook is that it lets you quickly test a variety of concepts with a very large audience. As a marketer, this should get you very excited! At no time in history has it been easier to find out what a market wants and will respond to – all for a few hundred bucks in ad spend. Amazing!

I want to test a variety of “themes” in my ads to see what works best. By “themes” I mean testing whether this market will respond best to pleasure versus pain, gain versus loss, being fit versus not being fat, etc.

I want you to vote on, or even suggest, what you think will be winning headlines!

Here are some initial concepts to get us started:

#1 – Turning 40 soon? Free report uncovers the top 5 health mistakes people make in their forties.

#2 – Turning 40 soon? Discover the 5 secrets to peak health in your forties.

#3 – Get in shape for your 40th birthday!

#4 – 7 secrets to looking sexy in your forties

#5 – 7 secrets of sexy Hollywood starts in their forties

#6 – How do Hollywood stars stay so sexy in their forties? Free report reveals their secrets

#7 – Turning 40 got you down? Maybe it’s time to get in shape…

#8 – Life begins at 40! If you’re in shape that is…

#9 – 40 things to do when you’re 40.  #1 – Get in shape!

#10 – I’m turning 40 and I’ve never felt better. Free report reveals his secrets

I could go on and on – this stuff is fun!

Once we have some headlines nailed down, we’ll work on picking some images to go along with them.

Cast Your Vote!

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below? What “themes” do you think will work best? Should I focus on the positive of feeling great in their forties, or the pain of entering their forties feeling like a slug?

Which headlines do you think are on the right track?

Do you have others you think we should test?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

  1. Rob Wilson says:

My main comment would be that some of the headings actively exclude anyone who has had their 40th birthday. They may even exclude people who are say 35 feel like getting fitter but also that their 40th birthday is miles away. A lot of the headlines have this effect. Hope that helps.

  2. Richard says:

I’d have to agree. Many of the headlines are aimed at 40 year olds. Even if you were 41 or 42 etc, the headlines don’t sound as though this would be for you because you are not 40, you are 41, 42 or whatever.

I agree – thanks guys. This was intentional; my thought was that I would specifically target people between 38 and 40 as I thought they would be at the height of their emotion at this point in regards to turning 40.

That being said, if we found this was a viable audience, the idea was we’d build a program around fitness “in the second half of life”, which would definitely allow us to target more broadly.

      Good feedback!

  4. Joe says:

The real question is, will FB approve any of these ads? I would imagine they have a very strict policy on diet/weight type offers.

  5. Jay Walsh says:

How about: “Are both you and your waistline turning 40?”

…and don’t forget about us folks turning 50. We still think we’re young and are probably ready for a last shot at looking young.

  6. James says:

I’m 42 and am already interested in your product. I like number 8 personally but 1,2,7 and 9 are also good to me. The things about sexy Hollywood stars seem like they’d appeal more to females. I think the excellent p90x infomercials are very similar to this theme and they focus on how much people turned their health around (before and after).

  7. Joe says:

I like the typo/pub in the title! Is creatine good safe for over 40s? ;-)

  8. Alex says:

How about “40 days to living your forties healthier”or some thing in that nature.

  9. David says:

I like Alex’s idea. Kind of catchy, includes the whole 40′s age group, and it says there is a plan which isn’t too long. If the program is too long people may not get interested.

  10. Mike Cooch says:

Great ideas everyone. As you might expect, we’ll be following the #1 rule of direct marketing – TEST! We’ll run a bunch of different ad headlines and let you know how it goes.

  11. Miki Vicioso says:

I think #4 and #6 are good choices, it will definitely make people wonder what method you will be using to accomplish getting in shape. I would love to see how these perform in general. I’ve tested facebook ads selling some products and volume has not been that great. I like Jay’s suggestion because of the same thing, makes you wonder.
